Workouts per weekCommon questions
How many calories should I eat to lose weight?
Fewer than your body burns, by about 250 to 750 calories a day depending on how fast you want to go. The calculator finds your number from your age, height, weight, steps and workouts.
How does the calculator work out my calories?
It uses the Mifflin-St Jeor formula for what your body burns at rest, then adds your daily life, your steps and your workouts. After that it takes a gentle cut off the total and warns you if a goal would mean eating too little.
How fast can I lose weight?
You see three paces, gentle, steady and faster, each with the date you could reach your goal. Steady, about 1 lb (0.5 kg) a week, suits most people. It is an estimate, and real life moves the date.
Do steps and workouts really change my calorie number?
Yes. Walking 10,000 steps a day burns far more than 3,000, so a calculator that ignores steps hands you a number that fits someone else’s day.
Is this calculator safe for everyone?
It is an estimate for healthy adults, not medical advice. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a medical condition, take medication, or have a history of disordered eating, please talk to your doctor first.
