Common questions

How many calories does 10,000 steps burn?

For a 165 lb (75 kg) person at a normal pace, about 375 kcal. A lighter person burns less and a heavier person more, so type in your own weight to get your number.

How many steps are in a mile?

About 2,000 to 2,400 for most adults, fewer if you are tall and more if you are short. A kilometre is roughly 1,300 to 1,500 steps.

How does the calculator turn steps into calories?

It multiplies your steps by your weight and your walking pace. A heavier body and a faster walk burn more per step. It is an estimate, and it uses the same maths as our weight loss calorie calculator, so the numbers agree.

How many steps should I walk to lose weight?

Any number you can repeat most days works. 10,000 is a popular target, and 6,000 on most days still counts. Steps add to what you burn every day, and weight comes off when that fits with how much you eat.

Does walking faster burn more calories?

Yes, a little. A brisk pace burns about 15% more per step than a normal one in this calculator, and you cover the distance sooner. Pick the pace that feels like yours.
