Common questions

How much water should I drink a day?

For most adults, roughly 1.5 to 3.5 litres (50 to 120 oz) from drinks, depending on weight, steps, workouts and weather. The calculator finds your number from those four things.

Do coffee and tea count as water?

Yes. Tea, coffee and drinks without sugar all count. Food adds about 20% on top of the number you see.

Does drinking water help with weight loss?

Water has no calories, so swapping a sugary drink for a glass saves calories, and a glass before a meal helps some people feel full. Fat loss still comes from the calories you eat and burn.

Why does the calculator ask about steps, workouts and weather?

You lose more fluid when you walk, work out or sit in the heat, so those days call for more. Your weight sets the starting point and the other three add on top.

Is it safe to drink this much?

For healthy adults, sipping through the day around this number is fine, and pale yellow urine is a handy sign you are on track. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a kidney or heart condition, or take diuretics, ask your doctor first.
